Kabali fame Sai Dhanshika stars in the action crime thriller Dakshina, set to hit theaters tomorrow (October 4, 2024). On this occasion, we had the exclusive opportunity to speak with director Osho Thulasiram about the film. Here’s the transcript of our conversation.

Tell us about your movie Dakshina

After directing Mantra and Mangala, I chose to make an action crime thriller and it is Dakshina. Sai Dhashika plays the main lead. I am confident about this project because it features an engaging script and screenplay. Moreover, the climax is outstanding and promises to thrill audiences.

What made you choose Sai Dhanshika for the lead role?

I watched Kabali in 2016 and was impressed by Sai Dhanshika’s performance. When Dakshina was announced, I decided she would be the perfect fit for the cop role and communicated this to the producer. Initially, he had reservations, but after considering various options, he confirmed that Dhanshika was the final choice.

How did you convince Sai Dhanshika to join the project?

My producer and I traveled to Chennai to narrate the story to her. She listened intently, and when we asked for her reaction, she expressed that she loved the concept and referred to her character as ‘Lady Arjun Reddy.’ She agreed to join us right away, and we proceeded with the shooting.

It’s been over a decade since you last directed a film. How does it feel to helm a project now?

Even though I haven’t directed recently, I’ve kept a close eye on industry trends and the work of newcomers. I understand how to engage audiences, and I have a strong feeling that the climax featuring Sai Dhanshika and the antagonist will be a highlight that captivates viewers.

Is it necessary to use cuss words in the movie?

You may find the use of strong language surprising, but I intentionally included it to reflect the protagonist’s journey. She undergoes significant challenges, and her transformation shocks the villain, which justifies the language used. Interestingly, the censor board appreciated the film and passed it with zero cuts.

Do you have any plans to make Mantra 2?

The idea for Mantra 2 is definitely there, but it requires Charmme Kaur to reprise her role as the lead. Unfortunately, she is currently busy with her production projects. So, we’ll have to wait and see how things develop over time.

What are your plans for future projects?

For now, I am eagerly awaiting the audience’s response to Dakshina and will announce my next project soon.
