Published on Nov 1, 2021 7:20 pm IST

Suriya is ready with his new film Jai Bhim that will be out tomorrow. On this occasion, we caught up with him for a brief interview. Here is the transcript.

What attracted you to this film?

The film is based on real-life incidents and is derived from a book. The manner in which lawyer Chandru fought for many downtrodden people moved me and that is the reason, I said yes to the film.

How did you prepare for the role?

Justice Chandru is an old man now and we showed him when he was in his middle age. So, look wise, we did not work oo much but I made sure that I got his emotions and behaviour as to how he used to deal with the cases. As I play a lawyer, I met a few lawyers and dug deep into their cases and how they dealt with them emotionally as well.

What is the title justification for Jai Bhim?

Not many know that the title Jai Bhim was with director Pa Ranjith. It is about how the suppressed use the phrase and show their fight against the bad. Once you watch the film, you will have a better idea as well.

Do you miss the theatrical release of the film?

In a way yes. We have done what is best for the film. As the times have changed and things are not certain, we were forced to go for OTT. But at the same time, we are happy that the film will be watched by a wide range of audiences.

Working with the likes of Rao Ramesh?

This is the first time that I am working with Ramesh Garu and he is just splendid in his role as a defense lawyer. He has brought a lot of weight to the film as well. All my scenes with him will be quite intense.

Working with the director Gnyanvel?

He is quite an intense director and showcased the film in the most realistic manner possible. The film is based on how a particular caste faced police brutality in the year 1993. The film has some very strong violence and that is the reason we also go an A certificate.
