Surya Teja’s debut film, Bharathanatyam, is now out in theatres. Surya Teja himself penned the story, and the movie is directed by KVR Mahendra. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Raju Sundaram (Surya Teja) tries hard to make it big in the film industry. He wants to become a director in TFI, but he comes across producers who suggest unnecessary changes in his scripts. Raju’s girlfriend (Meenakshi Goswami) wants him to do some job, but Raju doesn’t want to leave the industry. His mother has some medical problem, and a huge amount is required for the operation. With no option left, Raju looks for easy money, but he ends up landing in a huge mess. How he comes out of it is what the film is about.

Plus Points:

The crime sequence, which comes right before the halfway mark, is decent. Surya Teja Aelay did a decent job in his first film. However, there is room for improvement in certain aspects.

The last ten to fifteen minutes of the film involving Viva Harsha provide some relief. This particular portion of the film is entertaining, and the humor works here. Ajay Ghosh and Harshavardhan are good in their respective roles.

Minus Points:

The story of Bharathanatyam doesn’t have an interesting hook point, and hence, it fails to catch our attention. When the story isn’t great and if it is something that has already been explored earlier, the screenplay needs to be gripping. Sadly, Bharathanatyam gets it wrong in this aspect as well.

The majority of the film feels disjointed, as the narrative lacks proper flow and connection. The lack of consistency in the storytelling and the not-so-great plot hinder the impact considerably.

The makers attempted spoof comedy with Viva Harsha in the first half, but it never worked. Not just spoofs, the team also intended to generate laughter through dark comedy, but it didn’t land well. There are some buildup scenes for the protagonist every now and then. These scenes seem completely out of place and increase boredom.

One eagerly waits until the interval to understand what the film is about. Once the main point is revealed, our interest fizzles out. The second half is also pretty boring, except for the final moments.

Technical Aspects:

Vivek Sagar’s music is just about okay. The same goes for background scores as well. Venkat R Shakamuri’s visuals are neat, and the production values are fine. The editing is below par as the film becomes tedious in many places.

More care should have been taken regarding the story and screenplay. Though the story isn’t new, the film would have been interesting only had there been some captivating elements, especially in the second hour.

Verdict:

On the whole, Bharathanatyam is a disappointing crime comedy that doesn’t have a strong storyline. The execution isn’t any better, and the film has many boring moments. Debutant Surya Teja is decent in his performance, and there are very few interesting scenes. Viva Harsha’s comedy sequence over the end works very well, but it isn’t enough to save the day.
