So, continuing the series of reviewing OTT shows and films, our today’s pick is the Hindi film Kaali Khuhi. The film is available on Netflix and let’s see how it is.

Story :

Ten-year-old Shivangi(Riva Arora) accompanies her parents, Priya (Sanjeeda Sheikh) and Darshan (Satyadeep Misra), on a trip to her ancestral village to check on her ailing paternal grandmother (Leela Samson). As soon as she lands there, weird things start to happen. Shivangi gets dragged into it and finds out that all this is happening only because of an evil spirit and a deadly well called Kaali Khuhi. There is also a connection related to small female babies to the whole story. How Shivangi takes the help of Stay Maasi(Shaban Azmi) and unravels the mystery is the whole story of the film.

What’s Good

It was good to see Shabana Azmi after a long time on screen. She does an exceptional job as Satya Maasi and brings a calming effect to the film. All her scenes with Riva Arora have been showcased quite well. But the young girl, Riva Arora is the star of the film as she gives a stand outperformance. The young actress looks brave and showcased varied emotions with her eyes.

The supporting cast also does well in the film. The production values are good and some scenes related to the Black Well have been executed nicely at the beginning of the film. The other two child artists, Hetvi Bhanushali and Rose Rathod, who play the spirit and Riva’s friends are also okay. The sound design is solid and so were the arresting visuals.

What’s Bad

The story is decent but its narration could have been better. The film is narrated on a simple note and the essence which is created at the beginning is not at all maintained till the end. There are also several lopeholes in the script as logic goes for a toss in the pre-climax.

The evil spirit and the manner in which itnis unravelled looks a bit silly. Also, the twists showcased do not create that effect. Writing is weak in the latter part of the film and the climax is rushed.

Verdict :

On the whole, Kaahi Khuhi is a film that has a decent premise and also starts off well. But when the crucial episodes start getting unravelled, the writing becomes weak and scenes look a bit over the top. The pre climax misses several logics and the main twists are not dealt effeively making this film a dull and boring watch.
