After garnering positive feedback in Tamil, horror thriller Demonte Colony 2 has been dubbed into Telugu and premiered today amid modest expectations. Check out our review to see how the film fares.

Story:

Debbie (Priya Bhavani Shankar) is determined to uncover the truth behind her lover Samuel Richard, aka Sam’s (Sarjano Khalid), tragic and mysterious suicide. With the guidance of a daoshi (Tsering Dorjee), she contacts Sam’s spirit, only to discover a shocking link between him and estranged twin brothers Srini and Raghu (Arulnithi). As Debbie digs deeper, she uncovers the existence of a cursed book, Unsung King of a Fallen Kingdom, and a malevolent curse that recurs every six years. Faced with intense challenges, she must find a way to break this curse. How is this dark tale linked to Demonte Colony? Where is the mysterious book hidden? And why is it crucial to save the twin brothers? The answers lie within this thrilling journey, filled with unexpected twists and turns, waiting to be experienced on the big screen.

Plus Points:

Director Ajay Gnanamuthu masterfully intertwines the storyline of Demonte Colony with its sequel, Demonte Colony 2: Vengeance of the Unholy. The connection between the two films is both seamless and compelling, adding depth to the overall narrative.

Priya Bhavani Shankar, who previously faced criticism for her performance in Indian 2, delivers a remarkable performance here. She commands the screen as the film’s central character, bringing depth and intensity to her role that significantly elevates the story.
Arulnithi shines in his dual roles, providing a strong counterpart to Priya’s performance and enhancing the film’s dynamics.

The screenplay is well-crafted, maintaining a tight grip on suspense throughout. The cleverly executed twists and turns keep the audience engrossed, culminating in a cliffhanger that leaves viewers eagerly anticipating Demonte Colony 3.

Minus Points:

The film’s non-linear narrative might confuse some viewers, particularly those who haven’t seen the first installment. This complexity could detract from the overall clarity of the story.

The visual effects, while functional, fall short of creating a fully immersive horror experience. Improved execution in this area could have significantly amplified the film’s eerie atmosphere.

Some characters, notably Arun Pandian’s and the college students, could have been better developed to deliver more impactful horror moments.

A few scenes in the second half could have been trimmed to enhance the pacing and keep the narrative flowing smoothly.

Technical Aspects:

Ajay Gnanamuthu skillfully helms the film, ensuring that the story’s execution and its connection to the prequel are both cohesive and engaging. The screenplay, co-written by Ajay Gnanamuthu, Venky Venugopal, and Rajavel, is well-structured, effectively maintaining the film’s suspenseful tone. However, they could have paid more attention to certain scenes in the second half that, with some fine-tuning, could have delivered an even more thrilling experience.

Hareesh Kannan’s cinematography is competent, though a bit more polish could have enhanced the visual appeal. Sam CS’s score is a standout, heightening the film’s tension and excitement. Kumaresh D’s editing is neat, and the production values contribute to the film’s overall authenticity. However, more refined CGI work could have further enriched the visual experience. The Telugu dubbing is also neat, giving the feel of a straight film.

Verdict:

On the whole, Demonte Colony 2 is a horror thriller that delivers a fine amount of chills and thrills. Priya Bhavani Shankar and Arulnithi excel in their roles, supported by a well-narrated story and a decent screenplay. However, a few confusing moments, some scenes in the second half, and underwhelming visual effects slightly weaken the experience. The film is worth watching for those who enjoy horror thrillers.
