Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Indiana Jones 5) is the fifth and final film in the Indiana Jones franchise. The expectations on the film are quite high, as a new installment in the franchise has been released today in theaters after 15 years. Check out the review to know how the film fared.

Story:

Set in 1944 during the World War II, Henry Jones Jr, aka Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), is captured by the Nazis. Jones, who is in search of the Lance of Longinus, accidentally finds the Antikythera, also known as the Dial of Destiny. The story moves to 1969, and Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), a former Nazi and an astrophysicist hired by NASA, wants the Antikythera to change the past. Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Jones’ goddaughter, snatches one of the parts of the Dial of Destiny and later joins him to find the other part. Jurgen Voller is after them to find and snatch the other part. What happens next? Do Helena and Henry Jones find the other part? What does Jurgen Voller do next? The movie will unfold the answers.

Plus Points:

Audiences have high hopes for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny because it’s the last movie in the series, with Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones for one last time, and James Mangold directing the movie instead of Steven Spielberg.

80-year-old Harrison Ford, who is popular for playing the iconic role of Indiana Jones, is back in action in his style. As usual, he played his part very well, and it’s delightful to see him back in action. The initial 20 minutes of the movie showcase him as the younger Indiana Jones, and it’s the best part for fans of the actor.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who plays Helena Shaw in the film, is a beauty with brains. She performs well in her given role, and it’s good to see her accompanying the protagonist in action sequences.

A couple of fifteen-and-more in-length chase sequences are well-visualized, and they keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The camera work and score in these particular scenes are impressive.

Minus Points:

One would expect a better ending to the 42-year-old franchise and a better farewell to the actor who played the titular role for years. Unfortunately, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny fails to engage the audience, blame the poor writing in the second half.

The first hour is filled with interesting and thrilling scenes that make one anticipate a better second hour. Sadly, the latter portion fails to amuse the audience. The predictable second part lacks the thrills and the plot twists, running very palely.

A better emotional bond could have been shown between Henry Jones and Helena Shaw. Teddy Kumar, played by Ethann Isidore, could have gotten more scenes, which might have helped a bit. Jurgen Voller’s role, played by Mads Mikkelsen, could have been portrayed more villainously. He is just acceptable in his role.

This is the first and last film in the Indiana Jones franchise that tackles the concept of time travel. However, it was not convincingly shown. The makers could have come up with a better story regarding this.

Technical Aspects:

The direction by James Mangold is not great, and he could have pushed the writers to come up with a better second half that engages everyone, just like the first half.

The cinematographer and music composer did their jobs well, and it is the editors’ team who could have trimmed many unnecessary scenes in the second half. The lengthy runtime is also a curse to the audience due to the pale screenplay in the second half.

Verdict:

On the whole, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is an action-adventurous film that doesn’t live up to the hype. Although Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge deliver good performances, and the film features a couple of great action sequences, it fails to entertain due to the poor second half. If you’re a hardcore fan of the Indiana Jones franchise, watch it. Otherwise, look out for other options.
