Indrani, touted to be India’s first superwoman film, is now playing in theatres. Yaaneea played the superwoman, and Stephen Pallam directed it. Let’s see how the movie is.

Story:

Set in 2122 AD, India gets permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council. Also, India is entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining international peace. Hence, India’s Prime Minister establishes an organization named I.S.F (Indian Super Force) to compete with other nations. But China launches an attack on India, which forces Superwoman Indrani (Yaaneea) to travel back in time. Why did Indrani go back in time? Did she fulfill her task? What challenges did she face in this regard? This is what the film is about.

Plus Points:

Yaaneea, who played the titular role, gave her best to the film. The actress learned sword fighting and nunchaku moves for this sci-fi entertainer, and her efforts must be appreciated. The banter between Yaaneea and Sapthagiri in the second half elicits a few laughs.

Popular Youtuber Sunaina appeared as a news reporter, and she did a fair job. A few of her interactions with Sapthagiri provide respite. Some scenes involving the visual effects are nicely designed. The second half has a couple of good moments.

Minus Points:

Indrani is no doubt ambitious, and in fact, the storyline is also decent with futuristic themes. But the execution doesn’t do justice to the script. At a runtime of nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes, Indrani becomes exhaustive. The screenplay is not up to the mark, due to which the audience can easily disengage from the proceedings. The songs could have been avoided.

Dialogues could have been written better. A few seem out of place. Also, more care should have been taken regarding the dubbing. The director tried to make this superwoman film as a commercial entertainer by incorporating all the elements, but it turned out to be a bad decision.

The makers wished to pay tribute to the late Amresh Puri by making use of his iconic dialogues Mogambo Kush Hua and Mogambo Kush Nahi Hua. Unfortunately, the entire Mogambo episode featuring Ajay did not entertain as expected.

Technical Aspects:

Sai Karthick’s music and background score are way below the mark. The background score seems non-existent in many scenes. Charan Madhavaneni’s cinematography is decent. The editing is not satisfactory as the film is very lengthy. The production values are good.

Stephen Pallam’s creativity is visible in the smoking disclaimer and the end card, but unfortunately, the film lacks this creative touch. The decent premise is marred by unwanted punch dialogues and commercial elements. The makers have spent a bomb on Indrani, but more care should have been taken regarding the screenplay.

Verdict:

On the whole, Indrani is an unengaging sci-fi thriller that looks good on paper but falters in execution. Yaaneea did a fine job, and the movie has some nice visuals. In order to make the film a commercial entertainer, elements like punch dialogues and songs were included, but these were totally unnecessary to the plot. What otherwise could have been a decent outing ended up being a disappointing superhero film.
