DC’s latest superhero movie, The Flash, featuring Ezra Miller in the titular role, has released today in theaters. The movie created enormous hype before its release. Check out our review to find out whether the movie has lived up to the hype or not.

Story

Barry Allen aka The Flash (Ezra Miller), with the help of Bruce Wayne aka Batman (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), stops a bank robbery that goes wrong. Later, Barry wants to save his father Henry Allen (Ron Livingston), who was wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú). Barry believes he can save his mother by traveling back in time and goes back to the past. What happens next? Does he prevent his mother’s death? Does he meet his younger version? Does he return to the present and save his father? Who is Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl (Sasha Calle)? You will find all the answers in the film.

Plus Points

The Flash, the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), has a fine story and is packed with many nostalgic moments that fans will love on the big screen.

Ezra Miller delivers a perfect performance once again, surprising fans with a different look as his younger version. The funny conversations between the superhero Barry and the powerless Barry are enjoyable.

The film is also filled with nostalgic moments. It’s great to see Michael Keaton donning the Batman cape after 31 years for this movie. His character arc is well-done, and his conversations with the future Flash are meaningful. The emotional connection between the characters works well.

The time travel concept is nothing new to fans of superhero movies, but what makes The Flash enjoyable is Barry Allen’s emotional journey to prevent his mother’s death Sasha Calle surprises everyone with her portrayal of the powerful Supergirl. Although she has a limited screentime, she leaves a lasting impression. Wonder Woman’s cameo is a delightful surprise. Maribel Verdú gives her best in her small role as Nora Allen.

The Flash’s heroic act of saving the kids in the hospital is one of the highlights of the movie. The slow-motion moments when The Flash is in action are visually stunning. The overall visuals are vibrant and impressive.

Minus Points

The Flash features a simple story that lacks twists and turns. The most surprising part of the entire movie is Barry Allen’s interaction with Batman and Supergirl in another timeline.

The story in the second half could have been more engaging. It lacks a strong narrative, and the scenes involving the antagonist General Zod and Supergirl should have been more powerful. The second half lacks proper confrontation scenes between The Flash, Supergirl, Batman, and General Zod. The entire fight scene feels underwhelming.

The director missed an opportunity to create a stronger emotional bond between the present and past versions of Barry Allen. This could have enhanced the film significantly. Additionally, a few more scenes establishing Supergirl’s power could have made the film more enjoyable. The same could have been done for the character General Zod.

After all the events, one would expect a satisfying climax, but The Flash opts for a simple ending that lacks excitement. A better climax hinting at a sequel could have been written.

Technical Aspects

For the first time, director Andy Muschietti helms a superhero film, and he does an okay job. However, the writers, John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold, could have filled the film with more interesting scenes. The screenplay by Christina Hodson is good.

The visuals are terrific, thanks to cinematographer Henry Braham, and the VFX artists worked hard to deliver their best. The music by Benjamin Wallfisch is decent, although it could have been better, especially in the film’s high moments. A tighter editing in the second half could have greatly benefited the film.

Verdict

On the whole, The Flash is a decent film with decent nostalgic moments and emotional scenes. Ezra Miller delivers a strong performance, as does Michael Keaton. However, Supergirl and General Zod could have been better developed, and their clash lacks impact. Despite some unnecessary scenes and a simple climax, this superhero movie is worth watching this weekend.
